A metal roof outlasts most other roofing options by decades, and that longevity is exactly why so many homeowners now weigh it against traditional asphalt shingles. At The Roofer Direct, we install metal roofing systems engineered to resist fire, shed water quickly, and stand up to punishing wind loads. This page walks you through what makes metal roofing perform, how we install it, and why the material deserves serious consideration for your next roof.

Why Metal Roofing Performs So Well

Metal roofing reflects solar radiation rather than absorbing it, which keeps attic temperatures lower during hot months and can reduce cooling costs. A properly installed standing seam system also creates a continuous water barrier, because the fasteners are concealed beneath the raised seams and never penetrate the exposed surface of the panel. This design removes the most common failure point found in exposed-fastener roofs, where rubber washers dry out and leak over time.

Durability is the other major draw. Metal panels resist cracking, curling, and the granule loss that ages asphalt shingles. A quality steel or aluminum roof can last fifty years or more with minimal upkeep, which is why we often recommend it to homeowners who plan to stay in place for the long term. When storms bring hail or wind-driven debris, metal typically holds up better than most competing materials, and that resilience matters across storm-prone regions like Roswell, Alpharetta, Milton, Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Peachtree Corners, & Johns Creek, GA and other regions we service throughout the country.

Materials and Technical Specifications

We work with several metal roofing materials, each suited to different budgets and climate demands. Understanding the differences helps you make a confident choice.

  • Galvalume steel: A steel base coated with aluminum and zinc for strong corrosion resistance, offered in a wide range of gauges and colors.
  • Aluminum: Lightweight and naturally rust-resistant, an excellent option for coastal environments where salt air accelerates corrosion.
  • Standing seam panels: Vertical panels with concealed fasteners and raised interlocking seams, prized for their clean lines and superior water shedding.

Panel thickness is measured in gauge, where a lower number means thicker metal. We typically recommend 24-gauge or 26-gauge steel for residential work, balancing strength against cost. Coatings matter just as much as the base metal. Kynar 500 and similar PVDF finishes resist fading and chalking far longer than economy polyester coatings, protecting both the look and the structural integrity of your roof for decades.

Our Installation Method

A metal roof only performs as well as its installation, so we follow a disciplined sequence on every project. We begin by inspecting the deck and replacing any damaged sheathing, since a flat, sound substrate is essential for panels to lie true. Next we install a high-temperature underlayment that adds a secondary moisture barrier beneath the metal. Then we set flashing at valleys, chimneys, and wall intersections before the panels go down, ensuring water is directed away from every vulnerable joint.

Panels are cut to length, aligned, and fastened according to the manufacturer’s wind-uplift specifications. On standing seam systems we crimp or snap the seams to lock adjacent panels together, then finish with matching ridge caps, drip edges, and closures. Attention to thermal movement is critical, because metal expands and contracts with temperature changes. We account for that movement with the correct clip systems so panels never buckle or loosen over the years.

The Standards We Refuse to Compromise

We made firm decisions early on that to succeed, we would do things differently than our competitors, and three guiding principles shape every metal roofing job we complete.

  1. Do everything to the best of our ability: We cut no corners and use the best material possible, not the least expensive.
  2. Stand behind our work: In the rare event we make a mistake, we make it right no matter what.
  3. Ask for no money upfront: No material deposits, nothing until each stage of the job is complete and you are satisfied.
