A re-roof means removing your existing shingles down to the deck and installing a complete new roofing system. It is different from an overlay, where new shingles are placed on top of the old ones. At The Roofer Direct, we recommend a full tear-off in almost every situation because it lets us inspect the wood decking, replace any rotted or damaged sections, and install fresh underlayment and flashing. An overlay hides problems that will only get worse over time.
When a Re-Roof Makes Sense
A roof that is more than twenty years old, curling at the edges, losing granules, or showing daylight through the attic is a candidate for a re-roof. Repeated leaks that keep coming back after patching also point to a system that has reached the end of its service life. In these cases, spending money on repairs again and again is a waste. A new roof restores the protective barrier over your entire home.
Storm damage is another common reason. When hail bruises shingles or high winds tear them loose, the underlying mat can be compromised even if the roof still looks intact from the ground. We have Licensed Adjusters on staff who work directly with your insurance company to make sure damage is documented correctly and that your claim reflects the true scope of work needed.
Our Re-Roof Process
We follow a clear sequence so you always know what is happening on your property. Each stage builds on the one before it, and we do not move forward until the previous step meets our standards.
- Inspection and assessment: We examine the shingles, decking, flashing, and ventilation, then explain exactly what your roof needs.
- Tear-off: We strip the old material down to the bare deck and haul it away, protecting your landscaping and siding as we work.
- Deck repair: We replace any soft or rotted plywood so the new system has a sound foundation.
- Underlayment and flashing: We install synthetic underlayment and new flashing around chimneys, valleys, and vents.
- Shingle installation: We lay the new shingles to manufacturer specifications, paying close attention to nailing patterns and alignment.
- Cleanup and final walk: We clear all debris, run a magnet over the yard for stray nails, and review the finished roof with you.
Proper ventilation is a key part of any re-roof. Without balanced intake and exhaust airflow, heat and moisture build up in the attic, shortening shingle life and driving up energy costs. During a re-roof we correct ventilation deficiencies so your new system performs as designed.

For a re-roof, this certification means you get a fifty-year non-pro-rated shingle warranty instead of the thirty-year pro-rated warranty offered by non-certified companies. As a Master Elite contractor we also offer the GAF Silver Pledge warranty, a ten-year labor warranty backed by GAF. That means that GAF will send another company to fulfill the warranty if we’re not able to for any reason.
